Forum
The forum is an open area designed for enhancing communication within the wider garden history community. It is a place for questions, answers and comments as well as notices that may be of interest.
We have noticed that this page is increasingly being used to advertise events which is not really the intended function. We are trying to work on a method for flagging up other events of interest, but haven’t cracked this yet so we would urge restraint.
Anyone can add notices to the forum but we ask that you are first registered and logged into the site.
If you wish to contact one of the posters directly, then please contact us and we will pass on your message.

I am a garden lover and photographer with a particular interest in Russia, and I am planning a trip to Russia in spring/summer 2012 to photograph the country estates of some of the great writers – including Yasnaya Polyana (Tolstoy), Melikhovo (Chekhov), Spasskoye-Lutovinovo (Turgenev) and Pushkin Hills. In advance of my trip I am keen [...]

Having visited Chiswick House recently I would like to remind you to take the limted time the Rysbrack collection is on show, to visit Chiswick and view Lord Burlingtons paintings.

Hello,
I wonder if anyone could help. I’ve been trying to find out what planting companions Repton used for roses in his rosaries. I know that he advocated planting roses surrounded by box hedges, but I haven’t been able to find out whether he used any plants with the roses within the beds. [...]

The requirement to consult the Society on planning applications affecting Registered Parks and Gardens commenced with the Town and Country Planning (Consultation with the Garden History Society) Direction 1995. I am unclear whether this is still in force or has been superseded by other legislation. The T & C P (Development Management) Order [...]

with due apologies for the self-publicising … I hope some GHS members will be interested in my new book, published by Frances Lincoln in May 2011, with a grant for pictures kindly awarded by the Stanley Smith (UK) Horticultural Trust. Called Radical Gardening, it looks at the cultural politics of gardens and parks–by which I [...]

I live in a Grade 1 listed park and my land is classified as agricultural. I wish to fence about 4 acres in order to contain sheep. Does anyone know if I require planning permission to fence. I am proposing to erect a stock proof post and rail. Thank you

I live in an area that has a garden of special historic interest – Stoke Park Pavilions in Stoke Bruerne. In the next village (Alderton), there is a proposal for a wind farm. Apparently one of the nearest windmills will be around 450m away from Stoke Park but clearly visible above the trees. Is [...]

I’m currently researching baroque gardens, in particular the Italian gardens of D’Este and Bomarzo but by no means limited to those two.
I would be grateful for any recommendations of good texts or websites or essential places to visit in the UK. I’m currently reading The Idea of a Renaissance Garden by Terry Comito.

Hardwick House in Whitchurch has a small chamber lined in smooth chalk within a large depression which is known as a sounding house. The gardens were laid out in the 18th century, and have features on woodland walks on the side of a hill overlooking the Thames. Has anyone knowledge of other such sounding [...]

I am researching the history of the Rose Garden at Morden Hall Park (previously Surrey, now south London, managed by NT). It was created around 1930 by Gilliat Edward Hatfield and interesting character, who although very wealthy, lived frugally at Morden Cottage. Any information, relating either to Hatfield, or the Rose Garden would be greatly [...]

I’m planning a long border in our council nursery showing the development of gardens through the ages. As I want to use appropriate plants I wondered if there were any good books with details of varieties? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I am currently researching Melchet Court in Hampshire, and I am unable to visit the National Library of Scotland in Edinburgh where the Ashburton Papers are held (Inventory Acc.11388). Members of the library are unable to help as the collection is extensive. I am particularly interested in No. 151 of the inventory [...]
