Development of gardens through the ages
I’m planning a long border in our council nursery showing the development of gardens through the ages. As I want to use appropriate plants I wondered if there were any good books with details of varieties? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi Isobel,
There are some good postings on Metropolitan Museum of NY blog posts.
You could actually see whether you can find any reference from the below publications:
- Gerard, John. The Herbal, or General History of Plants. 1633 edition, revised and enlarged by Thomas Johnson. New York: Dover Press, 1975.
- Grieve, Maude. A Modern Herbal. 1931. Reprint: New York: Dover Publications, 1971.
- Griffiths, Mark. The New Royal Horticultural Society Index of Garden Plants. Portland, OR: Timber Press, 1992.
Hope this helps.

You may also want to look at Restoring Period Gardens, by John Harvey, Shire Publications, various editions, currently out of print but well worth a look. Also Discovering Period Gardens by John Anthony, again by Shire.
Luton’s Stockwood Park has a great series of Period Gardens, as does (did?) the RHS at Harlow Carr, in Yorkshire.
Hi Isobel, I wonder what periods you are planning to cover , as I am currently working on plant introduction dates and have spent the last three years researching the development of gardens between 12th century and the 17th century. Have a look at the forum on plant introduction dates and my own website.
Thank you for all your suggestions, they have been both useful and fascinating.
I have found “The Origin of Plants” by Maggie Campbell-Culver to be an excellent resource, especially the chronological lists of plant introductions which she gives with each chapter.
