Alexander Roos
Helene Gammack is interested in information about Alexander Roos, the mid-nineteenth century architect and garden designer, in particular his involvement, if any, with Claverton Manor near Bath.

I am interested in Alexander Roos who was involved at Tyntesfield, I should love to find any documentation about his work etc.
I don’t know about Claverton Manor but there is a Grotto there (more a Niche built from rubble and flint with a carved shell inserted under an ashlar arch)that has never been dated or its maker identified.
It has to be post-1820 when John Vivien built the house but how much later no-one knows.
Interestingly Roos built a similarly Italianate balustraded terrace with inset imperial lion’s head spout at Hadzor Hall in Worcs so there may just be a connection here. Roos also worked in the same county at Brockhampton Park where they reinstated his famed 1865 parterre in 1996 but guess what ? East of the kitchen garden there is a grotto-like rockery of tufa with a niche and rustic seat. Intriguing.
