Charles Hope Johnson Smith
Supornthip, a University of Melbourne Postgraduate student, would like to find out more about Charles Hope Johnson Smith, a scottish gardener who emigrated to Kyneton, Melbourne, Australia. His life, work, photos, sketches and his projects are all of interest.

Hi
Hes my Great great Grandfather and this is the first I know of him being a gardnenr. Any news on where I can get any info on appreciated.
margo
G’day.
I am a relative of Charles also. His daughter Ellen married William Begg in 1862 in Kyneton. That makes Charles my great great great grandfather.
Today I have received correspondence from Mrs Jeanette Guy who is a descendant of Charles’ twin brother George. She is searching for a photo of Charles which will show her what George looked like.
Mrs Guy says Charles was born on the Ormiston Estate in 1810.
She enclosed a photocopy of a book inside cover which reads:
PARKS
and
PLEASURE GROUNDS;
or
PRACTICAL NOTES
on
COUNTRY RESIDENCES, VILLAS, PUBLIC PARKS AND GARDENS.
by
CHARLES H. J. SMITH,
Landscape Gardener and Garden Architect;
Fellow of the Royal Scottish Society of Arts, Caledonian Horticultural Society, Highland and Agricultural Society and Edinburgh Botanical Society.
Published in London by Reeve & Co, Henrietta St, Covent Garden in 1852.
I believe Mrs Guy may have more information, so we may be able to swap further info if you are still interested.
Regards,
Rowan Begg.
I have just had a letter from a garden historian in Australia, Richard Aitken, who is looking for info on C H J Smith and suggests he was born in my house: Belsis, Ormiston Hal, the son of James a gardener for the Earl of Hopetoun [c1790-1816].
Can anyone throw any light on this.
