Sounding Houses

Posted on November 10th, 2010 by vicky jordan

Hardwick House in Whitchurch has a small chamber lined in smooth chalk within a large depression which is known as a sounding house. The gardens were laid out in the 18th century, and have features on woodland walks on the side of a hill overlooking the Thames. Has anyone knowledge of other such sounding houses – and their function?
