Temple Coffee House Botanists’ Club

Posted on November 1st, 2004 by Sian Jones

Dr Toby Musgrave is trying to research the Temple Coffee House Botanists’ Club. Based in London it was founded sometime the latter half of the 17th century, and cursory mention is made of it in the context of some of its well-known members including Henry Compton, John Ray, Leonard Plukenet and James Petiver.

He is speculating that it acted as a forum for debate and plant exchange among the gardening cognoscenti of the day and would be most grateful to hear any suggestions for avenues of research that may answer such questions as: when was the Club in existence, who were members, are there any surviving papers/publications, did it (or members) have links with other societies, in particular the Royal Society, and what exactly did the Club do?
