I’m trying to establish some facts related to garden designer Thomas Honney’s involvement with the Tunduru Botanical Gardens in Maputo, Mozambique.
If anyone is able to help me, I’d be most grateful.
Thanks
Dear Mr. fitz-Patrick
Did you ever find any facts about Thomas Honney, the garden designer.
I am his Great Grand daughter and I would be delighted to see or hear of any of his works.
I have heard of his garden in Maputo, I also heard that he laid out the park in Bulawayo Zimbabwe, but of that I am not certain.
I look forward to any news you may have.
Best wishes
Thalia Thain
Hi Thalia
Unfortunately, I’ve not been able to get any more information about Thomas Honney.
If you would like to correspond about him and his works, please contact me at alan.fitzpatrick@nufocus.co.uk

Thomas Honney is credited with our gardens here in maputo – where i live – i’d be very happy to send photos of how it looks now
two companies hav plans to rehabilitate it next year – one Vale – Brazil’s /worlds’ largest mining company and CFM who run the port and our railway. I’m keen to get some British input on the project. I searched a couple of years ago on Honney – but found next to nothing – gardens for the Sultan of Turkey and King of Greece mentioned in tourist literature here – but no more.
any info you have / his great grand daughter
ciao

apologies
any info you have / his great grand daughter … would be very helpful – so the gardens can be restored faithfully/ with reference to the original plan
see your correspondence dates from 2009 – hope you are still interested in Honney
Dear All
As you can see from my first posting back in 2006, I have unfortunately not been back to this specific site but things have moved on and just over a year ago two final year Architectural Students from Newcastle university linked up with two Architectural students from Maputo university to find carry out some research on what the people of Maputo thing and want from the botanical garden.
We now have quite a lot of information and a way forward now I need to start applying for some funding to get the restoration off the ground, but this will be easier now as we have some public consultation as well as several organisations in Maputo the UK and internationally who are behind the scheme.
If any one wants copies of the information/ repots to date please email me your address to patricknichol@hotmail.com and I will forward you a CD.
Unfortunately to date I have still not found any additional information about Thomas Honney or his original designs although the map in my report does show the existing formal layout of the gardens we don’t know if this was the original although I believe it would be.
I will be in Maputo in two weeks time and will try getting more on the history of the gardens from the parks department.
