The GHS Bibliography (in several issues) has been available to members since our inception in 1966. It lists books and articles on garden history, and related topics, in English language publications known to have been published since the last issue. It also includes earlier references which have not been included in previous bibliographies.

It is available to download and/or search below.

Email the editor of the Bibliography if you want to suggest items for inclusion in the next issue. Please submit entries in our standard format:

For magazine articles: Surname, Forename. Title [and/or explanation]. Publication Volume (Number) Date, Page numbers.

For books: Surname, Forename. Title. Publisher, Year.

The GHS Bibliographies are compiled from a wide range of sources and it is not possible or practical for the GHS to provide correspondence facilities or addresses for the authors. If you wish to contact authors, you will need to do so via the original publication.

The Bibliography is available in electronic form but individual paper copies are available for a small charge – please email the GHS Bibliographer. Alternatively you can print your own using the electronic versions below.

All bibliographies are in PDF format and you will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to view and search them. This is free and can be downloaded from the Adobe site.

Ray Desmond’s Bibliography of British and Irish Gardens (St Paul’s Bibliographies 1984, 1988 and 1996) remains the key work for researching accounts of British and Irish gardens from published resources. He also published a further, though different, Bibliography in our Journal in 1990 that remains a useful resource. It lists over 150 books and journals and other resources of use to researchers.
