Read the latest draft of the history of postwar gardens (Please use the paragraph numbers when referring to the draft document.)
In recent years, the GHS has been promoting the study of postwar garden and landscape design. In 1998 a two-day conference, held jointly with the
Twentieth Century Society, was attended by over 200 people; in 2000 the Society published a special issue of
Garden History on "Reviewing the Twentieth Century Landscape" (Vol. 28:1); and it has now held two workshops with the
Association of Gardens Trusts bringing together historians and practitioners.
An output of the workshop held on 21 February 2002 was the provisional history above, on which we would appreciate comments. It was designed as a summary and drew heavily on published work, which we would like to acknowledge with thanks. We would now welcome comments on the paper.
We are also gathering information on sites which might be considered by English Heritage as outstanding examples of postwar garden and landscape design. If you have any such suggestions please do not hesitate to make them, giving a brief description of the site's interest along with your details to enable us to follow up suggestions.
When we have had sufficient response we will produce another draft for further refinement.
